I was nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award by the rather splendid chaps at Moustache Movie News. It was rather nice to be recognized for my film waffle and I'm very grateful to them (please check them out!). The award itself is also rather splendid as it's a great way of sharing the love within your blogging community. The rules are as follows:
AWARD GUIDELINES:
- Post the award on your blog
- Thank the person who nominated you
- Answer the 11 questions they set you
- Pick another 11 bloggers (and let them know they are nominated!)
- Give them 11 questions
So, without any further ado, here are the questions given to me with my answers:
1. What inspired you to start a blog?
I started reviewing on Flixster back in 2007. I loved film and found a nice community of people who shared reviews and opinions with each other. Flixster soon went south so I concentrated on reviewing on Rotten Tomatoes. Again, after a while less and less people were discussing film and leaving reviews and I soon discovered that many of my reviews and quotes had been used for movie festivals, posters and in Wikipedia but I was never credited, Rotten Tomatoes were, so I decided to transfer all of my reviews to my own blog. It's an arduous task that is taking a long time but it keeps me out of trouble.
2. What's your most anticipated movie of 2017?
2017 is full of sequels that i'm looking forward to but apprehensive of. I'm scared stiff that Justice League and Wonder Woman are going to be awful. I'm looking forward to the new Spider-Man film and can't wait for Thor but the most anticipated movie of 2017 is probably either Blade Runner 2049 (they had better not mess it up) or Aki Kaurismaki's first feature film in six year; The Other Side of Hope.
3. You're hosting a screening event for several hundred people, what movie will you show them?
It all depends on the people I guess. If it's people I like I'll show them a film they might not have seen that I think everyone should see like Joshua Oppenheimer's The Look of Silence. I'd also want to give a shout out to films I think are great that have never got the recognition I think they deserve like Jeff Burr's Eddie Presley. However, everyone likes a good documentary and if it was me screening it and everyone there knew me, it would have to be Paul Goodwin's Future Shock! The Story of 200AD.
4. What's your most quotable movie?
Either Army of Darkness or Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier.
5. What historical event would you like to see depicted in a movie?
Well firstly, I want to see a law passed that says that all movies depicting historical events have to be 100% factual or they don't get released. I'd like to see a film about Yoshio Yamakawa, 87 and Tsuzuki Nakauchi 85 who hid on the island of Mindanao (600 miles from Manila) for 60 years believing that the Second World War was still going on.
6. You can visit the set of one upcoming movie, which one would you visit and why?
I wish the Muppets were making a new film, this would make the question easier to answer. I'd have to say Star Wars because a. I love Star Wars and b. I want to be an extra and spend the rest of my life signing autographs at sci-fi conventions.
7. The Emoji movie, quirky idea or sign Hollywood has lost the plot?
Hollywood lost the plot years ago. The Emoji movie (and the fact that emojis are now in the dictionary) signifies the end of days. We're all doomed.
8. What movie or movies most influenced your childhood?
I loved watching goofy chase/race movies like It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, The Great Race and Monte-Carlo or Bust and I think my sense of humour certainly came from them. However, Superman will forever be the greatest movie in my eyes, it opened up the magic of cinema to me and I cherish it. Although I'm the worlds biggest Muppet fan too.
9. Which of those movies do you most look forward to showing your children?
If my kids don't like the Christopher Reeve Superman (and like the others better) I will be heartbroken and will send them back and ask for a refund. All kids love It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World though don't they? When in doubt, give them Muppets.
10. Of all the nominations for best picture at this years Oscars, which do you think will win and which do you want to win?
All are strong contenders. I think La La Land will win in the end but I wanted Jackie to win (but criminally it wasn't nominated)
11. What are your top 5 movies?
That's a tough question and an impossible one. I have two lists depending on who is asking to be honest. If i'm taking to another cinephile and am being competitive I'll name the most obscure films I can. I have a list of films I think are stunning and I have a list of comfort films I adore.
Films I think are the most amazing:
5. Drifting Clouds
4. Blade Runner
3. Aguirre, the Wrath of God
2. Naked
1. Breaking the Waves
Films I adore that I could watch time and time again (true favourites):
5. Army of Darkness
4. Monte-Carlo or Bust
3. It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
2. The Muppet Movie
1. Superman The Movie
Phew!
