Crazy Heart
Dir: Scott Cooper
2009
****
Crazy Heart is a cool and steady drama from Scott Cooper, adapted from the 1987 novel of the same name by Thomas Cobb. There were quite a few changes made from the original version, which upset Cobb to the point whereby he wouldn't allow certain scenes to go ahead, namely an original ending that didn't make it in the final edition of the book, although Cobb had nothing to do with the making of the film. Cobb's depiction of Otis 'Bad' Blake is very different from Cooper's. Jeff Bridges rejected the role at first but was talked into joining the project once he knew the music would be key. It seems Jeff Bridges is not only a great actor but a great singer too, his performance in Crazy Heart is nothing short of brilliant, one of his best and he thoroughly deserved the recognition he received for it. The film itself was a little overlooked I feel, I thought the pace, script and overall ambiance of the film captured the mood of country music and the West rather well but I suppose if the music isn't to your taste you may struggle throughout. I personally found it a joy to watch, a great comment on overcoming adversity and the strength that comes from integrity. It's definitely my kind of film and the music is amazing. A modern day western in many respects and a damn good one too.
