Marnie
Dir: Alfred Hitchcock
1964
***
Personally I found Marnie to be a little disappointing compared to Alfred Hitchcock's earlier films. It's an interesting although flawed study in psychology, Tippi Hedren plays the lead role brilliantly but as for the rest of the cast (Sean Connery in particular) they're all a little bit wooden. I've sat through many a two hour film but this felt particularly and rather unnecessarily long and the conclusion just doesn't seem worth it. There is no real sense of intrigue or tension and certain scenes leave an nasty taste in the mouth, especially as they are never reconciled and left without retribution. The film is beautifully shot and remains one of Hitchcock's most successful expressionist pieces. It is entertaining but it's still a million miles away from Hitch's best and certainly one of my least favorite of his.
