Monsters University

I wasn't a huge fan of the original Monsters Inc, or any of the other new wave of Computer animated 3D type films of the late 90's. This was down to them all being preachy and telling the same story over and over again. It's like every American cartoon has to teach values on acceptance and individuality. It's tiresome, yeah it looks good and the people who made it are very clever etc but the story should be key. I'm a firm believer that cartoons of this ilk should just play for laughs and I really thought this one would, it's what the trailer suggested anyway. Overall I'm disappointed, it's better than the first but I certainly didn't love it.

Monsters Inc.
Dir: Pete Docter, Lee Unkrich, David Silverman
2001

I'm afraid to say I didn't have much love for Monsters INC when it came out and after giving it a re-watch recently, I still don't. There is nothing wrong with the animation or the idea, although some of the monsters look a bit crap in my opinion, I just didn't find it very funny. It's far too preachy when it should really have concentrated on being silly. It's almost a hanging offense to criticise a Pixar film these days but I just cannot judge a film solely on it's visuals, the content has to be good too. I don't really think Pixar hit their full potential until WALL-E and Toy Story 3.
