Chaos
Dir: Tony Giglio
2005
***
The inventive idea
behind Tony Giglio's 2005 thriller Chaos is very clever and it is a
unique entry into the heist genre but while I really did like the twist,
unfortunately, I saw it coming a mile away. A very clever idea, almost thrown
away by one very obvious scene quite early on. Giglio could have added an arrow,
a red circle and a sign that read 'Big plot spoiler this way' and been
less blatant in his direction. The way the conclusion was
handled does make up for it somewhat but there is no excusing the poor script
which is painful throughout. The action scenes also leave a lot to be desired.
It would have been a far better film had they have just concentrated on it
being a Crime/heist thriller and not a mindless action film. Jason Statham is
Jason Statham, toned down a smidgen but you either like him or you
don't. Ryan Phillippe is impressive, asking the question why he isn't in more
films of this ilk once more but Wesley Snipes still isn't back on full form,
although I can't actually remember when he was ever that great to be honest.
It's certainly not a total missed opportunity, it's still rather entertaining
but it should have/could have been better.
