Jason Goes to
Hell: The Final Friday
Dir: Adam Marcus
1993
**
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (except, surprise
surprise, it isn't) has the best opening scene of the whole
franchise. Tongue is firmly in cheek in this chapter as we see Jason
hung, drawn and quartered (shot and blown up) and yet he still survives.
Jason is the undead, he cannot be killed, Hell is the only option left (well,
Hell and Space, but that's a different movie). Jason Goes to Hell has some
terrific gore and stylish direction but that's really as far as it goes. Jason
Goes to Hell is a misleading title really as we hardly ever see Jason, we don't
really see hell and there is very little travel involved either. The only scene
other than the intro worth talking about, and it really was talked about in
1993, was the last scene whereby just as it looks like Jason might just fight
his way back out of hell, Mr. Freddy Kruger (well, his knife-gloved hand
anyway) pulls him back down into the earthy depths. It was basically filler, a
big advert for what was coming, although not as soon as the producers had first
thought. Freddy vs. Jason was speculated for a decade before it saw the big
screen. Jason Goes to Hell is certainly
not the worst Jason film but it felt like the most disappointing, much like
every film before had felt like.
