Mike BassettEngland Manager
Dir: Steve Barron
2001
***
A wry, funny and rather accurate dig at British football during the 1990's. The England side seemed to have a new manager every year and none of them seemed to know what they were doing. However, Mike Bassett is clearly based on one man in particular; Graham Taylor (nicknamed Turnip head in the press), England Manager from 1990 - 1993. Taylor was the man England loved to hate but as much as everybody screamed and shouted, I believe everyone had a soft spot for him as he was such a character. He even had a catchphrase ("Do I not like that"). Ricky Tomlinson's version of Taylor, with a few of his own ideas thrown in, was brilliantly done. This was 8 years after Taylor had left the England post but it didn't seem like an old idea. It was one of the first and maybe even the best British mockumentary films made. You don't have to be a football/sports fan either, the humour is universal although it's also very British.
