Joseph Guzman is clearly a fan of the 70's Exploitation films and films categorized in its sub-genre. Nude Nuns with Big Guns is a mix of Sexploitation, Vigilante, R&R (Rape & Revenge), Shocksploitation, Mexploitation and of course Nunsploitation. Very few of the original Exploitation films deserve praise, many are notorious purely due to bad press and because they have sensationalist titles. Most are bad, some are just sick. I would still argue though that the movement was imperative to modern day film making and that a few films in the genre are absolute masterpieces. Nude Nuns with Big Guns is Joseph Guzman's personal tribute to those films. However, unlike Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's Grindhouse films, Guzman has got it completely wrong. It's not a budget issue either, Guzman had some money to work with and the direction isn't too bad, although the editing is awful. Guzman's film is on the sicker side of the genre, in the 70's young directors pushed the limits of censorship for a reason, so Guzman breaks no ground here. Nunsploitation was always one of the stranger subgenres, the idea that Nuns were forbidden fruit, sexually mysterious and a worthy exploitative subject was always a little baffling to me, but maybe it makes sense to certain deviants. Indeed, you need to be either one of two sorts of people to enjoy this film. You either enjoyed it because you are a sick sexual deviant or because you've convinced yourself that this film is something other than what it is. I love a good exploitation film but this isn't one of them. It doesn't push any boundaries, it makes no statement, it isn't a spoof or a comedy either although I've heard many people say that it is. If you think raping an elderly Nun is funny then this film is for you, I'm more of a Seinfeld guy though personally. If it is titillation you are after then you're probably better off watching a porn film, throttle yourself with a rosary while doing so if you want to be edgy but just please don't buy into this kind of film, I'm no prude but it's really not very nice.
