The Company Men
Dir: John Wells
2010
**
We've all seen the films about poor people loosing their job so I guess it's nice that this film provides a counter balance in the form of the viewpoint of a reasonably wealthy executive. I'm being nice. No one really cares when rich people loose their jobs because it isn't really going to effect them in the same way. Watching Ben Afflick loosing his Golf membership and having to sell his second Car (a Porsche no less) tends not to provoke much emotion, at least not would could be seen as positive emotion anyway. Another character simply can't bare to loose his job and takes his own life which seems strange as he didn't really seem to like his job anyway. I guess this sort of thing does happen but it still feels very contrived to me. These people were earning mega bucks, if they didn't save a single penny then I have no sympathy for them at all and lets not kid ourselves, this film is all about sympathy and starting over *Spoiler alert* which they do, living happily ever after. Kevin Costner plays the 'Blue Collar' character for a sense of balance but just comes across as ignorant and just as arrogant. Plus, he also has a big house and a big family etc but earns a lot less which makes little sense in the overall story. Save yourself time and just go outside and punch a homeless person in the face rather than watch this nonsense.
