Weekender
Dir: Karl Golden
2011

Karl Golden was interviewed in The
Skinny magazine upon the
release of his 2011 film Weekender. He
began the interview by categorically stating that he wasn't a raver
and indeed, never attended a rave. This is quite clear after watching the film.
I don't think a director has to have experienced everything he or she directs
in a film but I do believe they should know at least something about the
subject. I question whether Karl Golden was actually awake during the
90's. I'm not going to be nasty or jump to conclusions but Weekender is a
cliched and rather tired look at an era that is as unconvincing as it possibly
could be. I'm sure there was a lot more to organizing a rave then
shouting "Whey hey" and "Oi oi", emphasizing the
word "wanker" at every opportunity and
telling policemen to "Jog on". The clothes are wrong, the
hair is completely wrong and I'm not sure they even got the
music right. It's lazy and it's boring. It's the sort of film Film4 made in the
early 00's that got it into so much trouble. It represents something that
didn't really happen that way and isn't particularly interesting
anyway. The friendships are unconvincing, the acting is abysmal and
the story is colour by numbers rubbish. A waste of time and money.
