Man Bites Dog (C'est arrivé près de chez vous) (AKA It Happened in Your Neighborhood)
Dir: Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel, Benoît Poelvoorde
1992
*****
1992's Man Bites Dog remains a relatively misunderstood satire over twenty years after its release and I dare say it will continue to divide opinion like all great films should. Benoit Poeloorde's performance is terrifying, his unpredictability makes for very tense viewing but alas, his character Ben is always missing from the typical 100 best villain lists when it really should be at the top. This is the darkest of comedies, filmed as a documentary with a Dogma95 feel about it (ahead of its time), in striking B/W contrast, with the cast eventually becoming part of the story. It's very clever, very sick, quite funny and absolutely brilliant! That's why The Blair Witch Project ripped it off for their now infamous ending. Early 90s cinema saw quite an exciting rang of films that are often unfairly overlooked, this being of the best examples. Recommended to all those without heart conditions but a good sense of satirical humour.
