Barefoot in the Park
Dir: Gene Saks
1967
**
I'm sure Barefoot in the park is a great play in the theatre but I'm afraid I've never thought much of Gene Saks' 1967 film adaptation. I thought the performances and characters were brilliant but the script fairly awful. I've always admired the quirkiness of Barefoot in the Park but the story jumps ahead of itself far too unconvincingly to the point were it comes across as a cheap sit-com rather than a great Broadway comedy. When a film has the brilliant performances from Charles Boyer, Herb Edelman and Mildred Natwick that it does, it's almost a crime that the rest of the film just wasn't nurtured enough. I do like it but it should have been something much greater.
