The Raid 2: Berandal
Dir: Gareth Evans
2014
****
The original film was impressive and a huge success, the sequel however is far superior but much less talked about. I don't get it. Gareth Evans has taken away the constraints of the first film and has built more on the persona of our main character and the underworld in general. It's not a new story but there are elements that are brilliantly original. The Raid 2: Berandal is somewhere between a really good mob film and a slick computer game complete with colourful end of level bosses. Once again, the martial arts choreography is second to none but the mood, pace and overall feel of the film is much improved. It's a real edge of your seat thriller at time which I didn't feel the first film was. Gareth Evans's first film was great, he knew what needed improving and he improved. I can't wait for his next film!
