Inside Llewyn Davis
Dir: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen
2013
****
The evolution of the brothers Coen in resent years has been quite interesting. The humour is still there but somewhat toned down, more subtle. Inside Llewyn Davis seems somewhat different to their other films and yet it is unmistakably theirs. Many directors have their signature quirks, often it can begin to grate and it can often effect an actors performance (for example, I find actors perform differently, often unnaturally, in Quentin Tarantino, Mike Leigh,Woody Allen and Coen films - sometimes at the expense of the film) but no so here. It would be unfair to say the Coens discovered Oscar Isaac but it is safe to say they saw his full potential first and have encouraged a brilliant performance from him. The reoccurring story is brilliantly structured and realised and no one mixes humour, drama and intense emotion like the Coens do. Every scene involving a cat stirred up a whole host of emotions and I'm really not a cat person. Another original entry in their already amazing body of work.
