LadybirdLadybird
Dir: Ken Loach
1994
****
Ken Loach is the king of social commentary, hero of the little man his first are always balanced and fair. Here he tackles a very difficult subject that many a director wouldn't go anywhere near. Ken Loach may have had the idea but Ladybird, Ladybird would be nothing without the stunning performance from Crissy Rock. Her portrayal of Maggie Conlan, a woman that can't be helped and refuses to help her self is amazing. I've never felt so much frustration, anger and sympathy all for the same character before, to achieve all three in one performance takes great skill. The story is a great document of the way things were at the time and should be remembered as such. Somethings will never change but we should all remember that people and their lives aren't always so black and white.
