Cuban Fury
Dir: James Griffiths
2014
***
You can tell just about any story as long as you have a half decent script and a bunch of likable actors and that is exactly what Cuban Fury is/does. I didn't care for the story one bit. The depiction of office life/London/Dancing etc are of that odd 'Who is this aimed at?' variety often seen in British films. Indeed, the unnecessary Simon Pegg cameo seems to have been put there for the American audience just so they can remember who Nick Frost is, while in the UK (the country the film was made and is set) we don't need this reminder. Nick Frost is a very capable actor in his own right. I'm sure he didn't mind his best mate popping up in his film but he certainly doesn't need what looks like a pointless endorsement. Nick Frost, Chris O'Dowd, Olivia Coleman, Ian McShane and even (again, because every British film needs an American actor - for the American audience) Rashida Jones are all fantastic, although for me it was Kayvan Novak who really steals the show. The film is genuinely funny, so many of the slight niggles I had were easy to overlook, I just wish it could have gone fully independent without tripping over the usual and somewhat tiresome cliches that nearly every mainstream British film has done for the last twenty years.
