Come Along, Do!
Dir: Robert W. Paul
1898
*****
Come Along, Do! is an early (in fact the earliest) film to comment on stereotypes as a man chooses refreshments over going into an art gallery. It is dry, sly and invariably witty and actually has story and structure when many of its contemporaries where still just happy to show film of every day events. Many have suggested that this is an allegory for the future of cinema and I can't help but agree somewhat with the cynical bastards.
Robert W. Paul is rightfully regarded as one of the greatest pioneers of cinema, and this is just a slight glimpse of his greatness.
