Fright Night
Dir: Tom Holland
1985
****
The first two thirds of Tom Holland's 1985 cult classic are riddled with every cliche in the book and it blends into every other bad 80's vampire horror film. Then, around 40 minutes in, it gets really good and ends with an awesome conclusion. I do wonder if this was intentional, have the audience tag along long enough to then hit them with action when they least expect. The werewolf scene and the melting man on the stairs are now regarded by fans as classic moments in horror. Perseverance is key here, although they really could have made the first half a bit more interesting the brilliant Roddy McDowell more than makes up for it.
