Hulk
Dir: Ang Lee
2003
**
The introduction to the Hulks first big feature was pretty good. I was quite thrilled to see the comic book stylings, including white boarders and bright colours. The film is visually great and directed as well as you'd expect from a talented director such as Ang Lee. However, the Hulk itself (himself?) looked awful. The special effects are quite dreadful, not really in the same way as cheap CGI does but in a way that is completely at odds with the surroundings. The Hulk has many impressive abilities, they didn't need to exaggerate these any more than what he can do in the comics. The scenes whereby the Hulk jumps ridiculously high, like a big green gnat, are almost painful to watch, they are that ridiculous (okay, obviously the whole concept is ridiculous but you know what I mean). The story is fairly forgettable, the structure a little lazy and there is very little wow factor considering the character. It was a great learning curve for Marvel, so at least we have it to thank for that but the Hulk deserved better.
