Fright Night
Dir: Craig Gillespie
2011
***
The original Fright Night is a bit of an 80's horror classic but it wasn't so good that the idea of a remake was sacrilege but at the same time I'm not sure it was really needed. As it happens, Craig Gillespie's 2011 effort isn't at all that bad although much like the original, the action happens quite late on. The cast is great but often wasted, Anton Yelchin is a great lead but Colin Farrell remains an odd choice for the role of Jerry. I love Toni Collette's inclusion but she wasn't given anything to do, Dave Franco and Imogen Poots are on my love/hate list but it was nice to see David Tennant in a big blockbuster, I'm sure he was hired thanks to his nerd following but I believe he proved his worth. Christopher Mintz-Plasse, as ever, steals the show somewhat as the brilliant Ed. The story is a little bit hokey, more so than the original if that's possible but the effects were pretty cool, even if they are mainly CGI over old school make-up. Utterly pointless but still good fun.
