Flight
Dir: Robert Zemeckis
2012
***
A good film but some would argue that it was the wrong way round. Essentially the film is about addiction and so rightly it is filmed the way it is but this means the film suffers from having a thrilling start and then a rather slow and monotonous second half. The seriousness of alcoholism is again slightly ruined by a misguided attempt at humour from a comedy drug dealer in the form of John Goodman (complete with Rastafarian hat). The real problem is that right from the beginning it is easy to see that the film can only end in one of two ways, you hope that you're wrong and that there is a clever twist but there isn't, it ends in one of the only two ways it could - which is nice but ultimately dull. Not that you'd want to glorify alcoholism in any way, of course not, except, they kinda do. Seriously, why would you want to give up when it looks so much fun, especially when you can obviously still function fully! It's entertaining enough, the Hospital stairwell scene was brilliantly scripted, and the thrilling Airplane scenes were great, but the big message is lost which really damages it overall.
