The Phantom of Liberty (Le Fantôme de la liberté)
Dir: Luis Buñuel
1974
****
The Phantom of Liberty feels a bit like Monty Python's And Now for Something Completely Different but with meaning. It's as surreal as you'd expect from Bunuel but it is a little more current than a lot of his earlier work. I love the way everything is turned on its head, not every sketch is good but when it works, it really works. The dining room/toilet seats scene is probably my favourite, why do we congregate in consumption but not in excretion? These and other contradictions will make you laugh just as hard as they will make you think. His funniest film in my opinion but also his most obvious.
