A Liar's Autobiography - The Untrue Story of Monty Python's Graham Chapman
Dir: Bill Jones, Jeff Simpson, Ben Timlett
2012
***
It's wonderful to hear the late great Graham Chapman's voice again. It felt like he was still alive for an hour and a half, and for that I was grateful. His autobiography is brilliantly funny, the idea of getting the rest of the Monty Python gang back together to record their parts in an animated version was inspired. It's a shame then that the animation is generally quite poor. The synopsis states that this is not a Monty Python film but it kind of is really, some Terry Gilliam, if only a few minutes would have been nice. It's the animation, poor editing and the inclusion of all the meandering bits of his biography that make the overall experience a trifle disappointing. Maybe it would just have been better to read the book.
