Zulu Dawn
Dir: Douglas Hickox
1979
****
Zulu dawn is seen as a sort of sequel/prequel to the 60s Zulu starring Michael Caine. It is written and produced by many who worked on the original film including Cy Endfield, Zulu's director and noted African history expert. Where Zulu explored the idea of mutual respect after battle and the British holding their own, Zulu Dawn paints a very different picture. The Battle of Isandlwana was the primary battle in the Zulu wars that really showed the British arrogance and racism towards the Zulu people for what it was. The anti-war message is much louder and far clearer, so it's a shame then that this is always seen as an inferior sequel when it is so much more. Visually it is as good if not better thanks to more modern film making equipment and the star studded cast all do a great job in their respective roles. An overlooked classic.
