Xavier Dolan is fast becoming one of my favorite directors. All of his films possess a modest flamboyance and a stylised confidence. Laurence Anyways is Dolan getting serious but without giving up on his signature traits. It's great to see an alternative film about a Transgender person that doesn't involve said person as a Prostitute, drug addict or suffering from a mental illness. The film is essentially about everyone else, their reactions to Laurence's honesty and the hypocrisy that follows. There is a beautifully tender love story running throughout that is intelligently and realistically portrayed, culminating in yet another stunning finale that I now expect from Dolan.
