Prince Avalanche
Dir: David Gordon Green
2013
****
Prince Avalanche is David Gordon Green doing what he does best; mild comedy, daydream drama. I don't really like his brash (stoner, if you will) comedies and I feel much more comfortable with Danny McBride being producer rather than being in front of the camera. So it's a remake of sorts, nothing wrong with that just as long as you check out the source material. David Gordon Green, Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch have added enough of themselves for them to claim this as their own, this being the first film (maybe with the exception of The 40 year old Virgin) where Rudd has actually been successfully funny with his ad-libbing. The story is dreamlike, slow paced, melancholic and refreshing. As toned down as the comedy was I found myself laughing quite a lot. Prince Avalanche is a tickle, a breath of fresh air and relaxing one at that.
