The Bride Wore Black (La Mariée était en noir)
Dir: François Truffaut
1968
*****
Francois Truffaut may well have been influenced by the films of Alfred Hitchcock but to give him credit he had his own style and way of telling a story. For one, dodgy humour was never in favour, satire is about as close as it gets to cheap laughs. This is a sweat tale of revenge, never over the top or unbelievable but inventive and full of suspense. Jeanne Moreau is delectable as the Bride, unlike Uma Thurman in the sort-of remake in Kill Bill. Quentin Tarantino should sometimes realise that less is more, his retelling of the story is a bit heavy handed, Truffaut's version is sharp as it is chic. This is a 60's classic not to be missed.
