The Marquise of O
Dir: Eric Rohmer
1976
****
The Marquise of O is one of few Eric Rohmer films not to be part of a larger series of works. I really wish there had been more. The Marquise of O has a slow pace and a simple story but it is a strong one, delving into history's treatment of acceptance. The acting is great, Bruno Ganz is particularly chilling as Count Der Graf, a valiant solder with a sinister undercurrent of obsessiveness and just plain nastiness and yet acceptable behaviour. I can't really comment more without giving the story away so all I can do now is strongly recommended it. Think Rainer Werner Fassbinder with less acidity but more money.
