The Epic of Everest
Dir: J.B.L. Noel
1924
*****
The Epic of Everest is an incredible documentary from yesteryear following Mallory and Irvine's 1924 expedition to reach the peak of the world's highest mountain. The visuals are haunting but stunning. It somehow doesn't seem real, it is amazing to see such footage and the BFI restoration is beautifully put together and includes a wonderful score from brilliant composer Simon Fisher Turner that works perfectly. The written dialogue can often date an old film more than any story or technology but here they are the perfect, and timeless, accompaniment. It's an astonishing feat of endurance and film making that left me completely agasp.
