Grabbers
Dir: Jon Wright
2012
****
Jon Wright's wonderfully tongue in cheek comedy horror Grabbers is basically what you get when you cross Whisky Galore! (1949) with Attack the Block (2011) and every bit as bizarre and brilliant as that sounds. It's very funny and is full of authentic Irish humour. It's also a very competent horror film, the effects and tension outdoing many of the big budget offerings in recent years. It is a lovely tribute to comedy horrors of the 80's and also a great example of independent cinema showing what can be done and where it can be achieved. It's a polished production that horror fans and non-horror fans can enjoy with a silly inventiveness that is a breath of fresh air to both comedy and horror genres. The idea that the best way to defeat Alien Sea monsters is to get drunk is the sort of ridiculous genius that Hollywood could learn from.
