A Letter to Uncle Boonmee
Dir: Apichatpong Weerasethakul
2009
****
Uncle Boonmee was a self-indulgent and very personal film for Apichatpong Weerasethakul. It is like a child to him, born unto him by broken memories and strong influences. Here, he acknowledges his heroes, influences and Uncle Boonmee himself. It is exactly what the title suggests, it is a love letter to classic Hollywood, the novel that inspired him as a child (that he can't remember the name of), people he has met, albeit briefly in his lifetime that left an impression on him, it's a love letter to his native Thailand and its a love letter to love itself. All shot in the same haunting and beautiful style of the main feature. A great companion piece.
