Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
Dir: Jake Kasdan
2007
**
The first rule when making a spoof or parody is that it has to be funny. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox story isn't particularly funny. It's clever, I get the jokes and noticed the references but most of them fall short of being funny and feel like wasted opportunities. It came as a reaction to the big music biopics like Ray and Walk the Line that had come three and two years before, it's not without its moments, I'll give it that but the far and few between funny scenes are overshadowed by the stupid, awful and unfunny scenes, they had plenty of time to get these right. It could and should have been a lot better considering the cast, writers and producers. John C. Reilly is a funny guy but the script let him down, the makers relied on his huge likability factor rather than let him let his hair down. The art of parody has been missing in action for quite some time, I hope it finds its way home soon.
