Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Dir: Jay Roach
1999
****
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery was so hugely successful, so a follow up film so expected and welcome. A tough act to follow, Mike Myers had to up the ante for it to work and that's exactly what he did. A big part of the first film was how Austin coped with life 30 years into the future, that part of the story needed to be replaced here with something new. That something was 'Mojo'. It's basically all about confidence, a loose theme to appease the producers when all they really wanted to do (and did) was to spoof many films and tell as many jokes as they could. There are more characters, a bigger budget and an exaggeration to everything that was so good about the original film. Golden rule for success, give the people what they want. Mike Myers knew this and acted accordingly.
