Ice Station Zebra
Dir: John Sturges
1968
****
Ice Station Zebra is a great Cold War espionage thriller set in the clever confines of a US Submarine. It really does keep you guessing until the very last scene, I'm usually very good at predicting who the villein is but I got it wrong here. Even the simple premise of surfacing turns into an edge of your seat experience, thanks to John Sturges's masterful direction. The script is very sharp too, with each actors strengths very much in mind. Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine, Patrick McGoohan and Jim Brown put in impressive performances that really power the film through the confines and tricky situations of the story and the constraints that come with it.
