Spider-Man
Dir: Sam Raimi
2002
**
Spider-Man directed by Cinephile Crocodile favorite Sam Raimi should have been a dream come true! In reality though it was a misfire. They captured the style and humour of Stan Lee's comic book character but I don't think Toby Maguire was the best choice of actor to play the web-spinning hero. I didn't like the overuse of SFX either, sure a superhero film will always need them but some of the scenes of Spider-Man flying through the air looked more like a cartoon than Spider-Man the cartoon! The unnecessary Macy Grey cameo annoyed me too (beware all cameos made by current celebrity of the month as this will date a film badly). Apart from the genius casting of J.K. Simmons as newspaper editor J. Jonah Jameson and the obligatory Ted Raimi and Bruce Campbell cameos you'd expect from a Sam Raimi, this felt like an overblown Coca-Cola commercial and not as good as what old Spidey deserved.
