Mo
Dir: Philip Martin
2010
****
I never really had time for Mo Mowlam when she was alive, mainly because I didn't really know that much about her and unfortunately I tarred her with the same brush as many of her colleagues. Mo tells her story without any unnecessary sugar-coating and it is as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking. The fact that her family and closest friends all agree that it was an honest portrayal of her as a person says it all. Julie Walters and David Haig are brilliant in the leading roles and they handled the story respectfully and tastefully. A great made for TV film and a good modern history lesson too. Some of the issues rased and some of the more personal scenes are better than a lot of cinema films and shows the real power of TV. It remains channel 4's most viewed TV drama since 2001 and was nominated for, and awarded, several BAFTAs. Deservedly so.
