Star TrekFirst Contact
Dir: Jonathan Frakes
1996
****
First Contact is TNG's Wrath of Khan. The similarities are there but each is original and independent of each other. Both films revisit popular episodes from their TV series, Wrath of Khan dealt with elitism and authority while First Contact dealt with Cultural assimilation. The similarities between Spock who is only half human and Data who isn't human at all are clear but the slight differences between them both make for a fascinating comparison. If it works don't change it, just explore it further, this is exactly what they've achieved. First Contact covers a few genres too, my favorite being a zero gravity Zombie style scene outside the ship. The Star Trek timeline is also explored which hardcore fans appreciated. There were aspects of the film that seemed a little too far removed from the TV series and some that I didn't really like but on the whole it worked. It's family friendly and you didn't have to be a Trekkie to enjoy.
