Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Dir: Leonard Nimoy
1984
*****
How do you follow up The Wrath of Khan, the greatest Star Trek film to date? Well, with a very intelligent story, that's how! Leonard Nimoy, Spock himself, is behind the camera this time and it feels right that he should be. Harve Bennett deserves most of the credit though, he tied up the 4 films beautifully and covered nearly every aspect of life in the process; Birth, Love, Death, God, it's all covered in these glorious films. You thought it was just a cash in of an old TV show didn't you? You're wrong, it's so much more. The way the message from the previous film is switched is brilliantly written; "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" to "Because sometimes the needs of the one... outweigh the needs of the many" in just one film. It's ambitious, exciting and has that unmistakable feel good factor. You don't need to be a hardcore Trekkie to appreciate that.
Much like the previous film, it's not without its tender moments either ('Klingon bastard you killed my son') and Christopher Lloyd is quite possibly the best Klingon ever!
