Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Dir: Nicholas Meyer
1991
***
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was to be the last Star Trek film with the complete original line up. It wasn't the best of send offs but its subject matter is probably the most original and most fitting of the films with the universal and multicultural idea of unity. The film itself is built up of several parts; Political corruption, Murder Mystery, Social unity and a good old fashioned prison break. This is Star Trek's 'Classical thriller' film. Nicholas Meyer was brought in to finish the original part of the franchise due to his success with Wrath of Khan but I'm not sure this is him on particularly good form. When it's good it's good but when it's bad it looks like a shoddy amateur dramatics production of the Church Hall variety. It was good to give the cast another chance to say farewell after the disappointing Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country's message is sound. Much like the previous film, the script is actually top notch!
