Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Dir: Leonard Nimoy
1986
*****
The Voyage Home is Star Trek being as 80s as it could possibly be. Although the story still continues in the same arc as the two previous films it was obviously felt that the series needed to be less serious and a bit more fun. Cue the time travel story-line. The crew go back to the 1980s to save the world! It sounds awful but it isn't. The story was quite contemporary at the time as people were becoming much more aware of global and environmental issues. The idea that a mysterious force (a brilliantly grim and simple looking vessel) that is destroying the Earth can only communicate with hump-back whales that have long been extinct, forcing the crew to go back in time to capture some, bring them back and hope that they tell said vessel to bugger off and leave them alone is quite brilliant. Nonsense, but brilliant nonsense. I saw it in the cinema with my Gran and it's a moment I remember fondly. It's the ultimate family adventure film.
