Shout at the Devil
Dir: Peter R. Hunt
1976
***
Shout at the Devil is a complicated and over the top mess of a film. It has very little direction, I'm sure the filming was as manic as it looks and I'd be surprised if no one got hurt. The performances are equally over the top. Lee Marvin plays the manic but charismatic drunk, Roger Moore the debonair would be suitor to his daughter, played by Barbara Parkins, who proves herself more than just decoration. The balance between light comedy and drama is uncomfortably uneven, slapstick and child murder are only minutes apart. The whole film feels like a rushed Odyssey, part action film, part historical drama and part cartoon. Madcap it is and to be honest it's probably all the better for it. It's so bizarre it's hard not to be attracted to it. Motley Crue like it anyway.
