Letter From an Unknown Woman
Dir: Max Ophüls
1948
*****
Letter from an unknown Woman is the ultimate melodrama. Visually, it is rarely matched, Ophuls captures the light and the darkness like no other director. I would argue that this is Joan Fontaine's best performance, every look and every frown could condemn the coldest of critics into blubbering children. Indeed, do not even think of watching without a full box of tissues. Heart-wrenching is an understatement and masterpiece doesn't quite do it justice. This isn't usually my kind of film (melodrama) but it won me over with ease.
