Gayby
Dir: Jonathan Lisecki
2012
****
The synopsis doesn't really do the film justice. It reads as quite an awful idea but look closer, Adam Sandler is not involved, nor is this a Judd Apatow production, this is an original, witty and wickedly written film by an independent film maker. It's not a gay film written by a heterosexual either which is a huge relief. It's refreshingly cliche free too, there is no denying it's a gay film but it really is for everyone to enjoy. There aren't enough gay films like this out there and homosexuals are often only cast in cliched and insulting roles. Gayby for me was like a Xavier Dolan film but a bit more casual and with a lot less pouting. Jenn Harris and Matthew Wilkas worked really well together and are outrageous and subtle when needing to be. Jonathan Lisecki is as good behind the camera as he is funny in front of it, I look forward to seeing more of his work.
