Hotel Splendide
Dir: Terence Gross
2000
**
Hotel Splendide tries a little too hard to be quirky that it often forgets to tell a story. Hotel Splendide is somewhere between Villa des Roses and Delicatessen although it is better than the former but doesn't come close to the latter. Jean-Pierre Jeunet is definitely an influence though, it's just a shame Terence Gross couldn't bring anything of his own to the table. The performances are either over the top or pathetically lethargic, Toni Collette doesn't know how to play it, Daniel Craig plays it several different ways, Stephen Tompkinson is way over the top and Katrin Cartlidge is criminally underused. Hugh O'Conor was pretty good though and pretty much steals the show, I'm surprised he hasn't had more of a successful career. Overall it isn't horrible but it's not something I can really recommend.
