Arbitrage
Dir: Nicholas Jarecki
2012
****
Arbitrage starts off very much in 'seen it all before' territory. It was like a million 90's thrillers done to death, good thrillers but certainly nothing original. A good thriller is a good thriller though and I got into it, I appreciated the strong performances, nice visuals etc everything was fine and then an hour in it gets really good. Clever writing from Nicholas Jarecki, he really knows how to reel in an audience, I certainly wasn't disappointed with the conclusion, in fact the last scene was nothing short of brilliant. Money and power are the route of all evil but self preservation (selfishness) ain't that great either. The worst thing is that by the the end of the film you question whether any of what he has done really matters. Chilling and poignant.
