In search of a Midnight Kiss
Dir: Alex Holdridge
2007
****
In search of a Midnight Kiss wears its influences on its sleeve. It's an ode to early black and White 90's Indies, that were in turn an ode to early 80's indies that were an ode to early 70's indies etc etc. It's no Before Sunrise but what it does do well is involve modern living into an age old story. This is not a new film, it's just 2007's version of it and for what it is worth, it is one of the better examples of it in its decade. The characters could have been a little better developed, Vivian in particular but its views on modern LA, the importance of age old tradition and the mysteries of abandoned shoes are all very entertaining. Any film that ends in a good old sing song is always alright in my book.
