They Who Dare
Dir: Lewis Milestone
1954
***
'He Who dares, Wins' is a well known motto that originated and was used by the British SAS. It is more commonly remembered these days as Del Boy's motto in the successful British Sitcom 'Only Fools and Horses'. Lewis Milestone's use of the term as the title of his 1954 film is however long forgotten as is the film itself. As War films go it's not bad but competition was tough in the early 50's. Lewis Milestone was a director you could rely on but without any real standout scene or performance, They Who Dare is sadly forgettable. I loved the concluding scene but unfortunately it came far too late, Dirk Bogarde and Denhold Elliott play off each other well but the script is never good enough for them to really show off their talents.
