Whip It
Dir: Drew Barrymore
2009
***
I'm not much of sports fan or a lover of teenage 'Coming of age' films but this one worked for me. It's serious when it needs to be and funny the rest of the time and all the characters were believable and most importantly, likable. It's pretty light on the cliches too which was a relief, as I was worried at first that the 'Alternative' youth were going to be misrepresented but I don't think they were (although what the hell do I know about America's alternative youth today?). All in all, an entertaining film and thankfully not some nasty male fantasy of girls hurting each other. The soundtrack was great also.
