Kick-Ass 2
Dir: Jeff Wadlow
2013
****
The original Kick-Ass did indeed, kick ass. It was the perfect adaption of what made the comic so good. Kick-ass 2 is a continuation of that story and in my opinion is just as good. The initial impact has now past but the character development continues. I have to say this is a breath of fresh air in the comic superhero heavy climate. It's funny with serious notes and serious with funny elements. Essentially it is once again about all those problems superheros have; Identity crisis - are you the hero or are you the secret identity, superpowers - they don't exist, are you a hero or a vigilante? etc etc. What this film brings above the other is the exploration of the origins story. Every superhero has to have a cool origins story. For this reason alone, this is more a The Mother*ucker film than it is a Kick-Ass film. Christopher Mintz-Plasse is brilliant as the struggling super-villain. He and Chloe Grace Moretz's Hit-Girl rightfully get as much of the screen time as Kick-Ass does. If you're a fan of the comics and a fan of comics in general you will appreciate this being one of the few adaptations that get it right. Jim Carrey is right, it is very violent - more than I expected but it is called Kick-Ass and it does exactly that, as it should.
