A Walk Among the Tombstones
Dir: Scott Frank
2014
***
A Walk Among the Tombstones is a decent thriller, adapted well from Lawrence Block's 10th Matthew Scudder novel. Ex-Police officer, PI Matthew Scudder is an updated version of Philip Marlowe in many respects; darker, grittier and more realistic. The ex-alcoholic Cop gone good is a somewhat dated idea now though but it doesn't seem so here. Hal Ashby's 8 Million Ways to Die was based on the same character but with very different results, A Walk Among the Tombstones is a far darker tale and is suitably murky. If I being honest it is an average thriller done well, nothing about it seems particularly original but it's full of suspense and entertaining all the way.
